I have been fascinated by the properties of clay since I first started working with it decades ago. The perceived fragility of porcelain, harkening back to the delicate (and forbidden) hand-painted teacups my grandmother had in her home, and the reality of its strength in industrial settings (see spark plugs, sewer pipes and floor tiles) remains a an area of intrigue. In my own work, experimenting with the load bearing weight of individual pieces built upon one another to create installations and sculptures far larger than my kiln could fire as a single piece, has been a continued source of investigation and challenge. Whether ribbons of porcelain that tumble down a wall, with the top loop bearing all the weight beneath, or delicate coils held in place by friction, there is a balance of both strength and weakness that I dance between.
In this show, I look forward to exploring past forms and discovering new ways in which I can capture the rhythm, movement and strength of delicate objects in clay.
